HalpaHalli: Breaking records!

How HalpaHalli almost doubled participation in its 20-year-old spring exercise campaign by switching to HeiaHeia.

HalpaHalli is a Finnish family-owned company that employs more than 1,300 people in 35 locations. As a family business, continuity, a long-term approach and responsibility are important principles for HalpaHalli – whether it concerns customers, staff, the surrounding society or the environment.

Introduction

HalpaHalli has a long and strong tradition of getting its staff moving and promoting activity. For more than 20 years, the company has organised exercise campaigns every spring, challenging staff to move and the head office, logistics centre and 35 stores to compete playfully against each other. In recent years, the campaign has been called Kunnolla kesään (“Fit for Summer”).

This year, HalpaHalli was looking for a new, affordable technology solution to run its traditional exercise campaign. A recommendation of HeiaHeia led to getting in touch – and to a multi-year partnership.

Solution

Switching to HeiaHeia paid off, and the renewed Kunnolla kesään campaign was a huge success. Previous records were broken and the number of participants almost doubled, with more than 700 HalpaHalli employees taking part in the three-month campaign.

HeiaHeia features that received particular praise included easy onboarding, the wide range of sports, the ability to log activities on both phone and computer, cheering on colleagues, and comprehensive integrations with various heart rate monitors and smartwatches, which made taking part even easier. HalpaHalli’s HR also praised the agile rollout of the campaign, effortless administration and easy-to-use reporting, which made things like rewarding participants clear and simple.

Implementation

The campaign format was also completely renewed: for the first time, the Kunnolla kesään campaign had three categories.

  1. A shared goal. Community across stores and sites was built with a new shared-goal campaign, in which HalpaHalli employees’ common goal was to travel around the world twice by collecting 84,000 kilometres.

  2. A team competition. Team spirit was boosted with a playful team competition, in which teams from HalpaHalli’s stores and support functions competed for the title of the most active team and for team money awarded to the Top 3 teams.

  3. Individual rewards. In addition, every participant had the chance to win extra ePassi balance by collecting at least 30 hours of movement and exercise during the campaign.

HalpaHalli employees embraced the renewed campaign enthusiastically. Over three months, participants logged more than 138,000 entries in HeiaHeia and cheered each other on more than 93,000 times. That means colleagues were encouraged more than a thousand times every day, on average, throughout the campaign!

Results

Active participation was also reflected in the results. The HalpaHalli community reached its original goal in just 22 days, and by the end of the campaign the kilometres collected together had reached an impressive 332,000 – almost eight times around the world.

Kilometres for the shared pot, for one’s own team and for oneself were collected in hundreds of different ways. Over the three months, participants tried more than 300 different forms of exercise and activity, of which walking was by far the most popular, with more than 11,000 entries. Participants also took part by ice swimming, skiing, doing break exercises, shovelling snow, horse riding, dancing, snowshoeing, doing yoga and playing padel, among other things.

According to HalpaHalli’s HR Director Janne Syri, it was especially gratifying to see the broad and active participation of employees in the logistics unit. This group of employees has traditionally been difficult to reach, and participation in previous campaigns had remained modest. This year’s team competition was won by one of the logistics teams, and there were as many as three logistics teams among the Top 10.

“Compared with the previous system, HeiaHeia is on a whole different level.” – Titta Stenvall, Executive Assistant, HalpaHalli

Here are a few more pieces of feedback from participants when asked what the best thing about HeiaHeia and the campaign was:

  • “The encouragement and the feeling of doing things together”

  • “The team spirit and, above all, that I moved more”

  • “An easy-to-use, inspiring app. I moved more :)”

  • “I could easily follow my own activity and sleep. This was motivating too!”

  • “The variety of sports”

  • “Ease of use, as the data goes straight from my watch to the app”

  • “Exercise became a nice daily routine without any pressure to perform. I’d like to keep using this app: it’s like a personal trainer”

  • “HeiaHeia brought more movement into my everyday life, but above all regularity 🔥”
